Verdict

Is the Caminito del Rey worth it? The honest answer

Yes, and the thing that decides whether you agree afterwards is one number: how much of the route is the walkway in the photographs. It is 2.9 kilometres of 7.7, and almost nobody prints that before you book.

Walkers on the Caminito del Rey boardwalk above the Guadalhorce river

Quick answer

Yes, if you know that the boardwalk is under three kilometres of a seven-and-a-half-kilometre walk. The rest is an ordinary path through pine woods, and it is pleasant rather than remarkable. People who know that in advance almost never regret the day; people expecting four hours of cliff sometimes do. Entry starts at $32 and everything here cancels free.

The case for

Five things that are true about it

Unique, cheap, easy, and with a story underneath the walkway.

There is nothing else quite like it in Europe. A metre-wide walkway bolted to a vertical wall a hundred metres above a river, threading a gorge that narrows to ten metres across. Plenty of places have a viewpoint; very few let you walk through the middle of one for an hour.

The old path makes it a story rather than a view. In several places the crumbling 1905 concrete is visible directly below you, in stretches reduced to bare steel. Knowing that workers used it daily, and that it killed people before it was closed, turns a nice walk into something you think about afterwards.

It is accessible to almost anybody over eight. Level, solid, railed, under four hours, no experience needed. This is not a hike in any demanding sense.

It is cheap. Thirty dollars for entry with a guide is remarkable value for what it is, and seventy for a full day with the driving done is not much more.

80,151 people have rated these listings, and the best of them sits at 4.9. That is an unusually consistent picture.

The case against

Four things to know before you book

A third of it is boardwalk, and the way back is your problem.

2.9 kilometres of 7.7. The boardwalk is about a third of the route and about an hour of the walk. The rest is a gravel path through pines. It is a good path and the day is still worth it — but if you pictured four hours on a cliff, adjust now.

It is one-way, and the logistics are yours. You finish seven kilometres from where you started. Day tours solve this; entry tickets mostly do not, and the shuttle runs to a timetable.

You move at the crowd’s pace. One direction, a metre wide, no overtaking. On a Saturday in May you will stop when the group in front stops.

No shade, no water, no way off. Four hours in a limestone gorge in Andalucía with none of those three is a real consideration in July, and the route closes outright in extreme heat.

The column that matters is whether the return from the southern exit is included. Read it before the price.

What each ticket costs

Who should and should not book it

Six straight answers

A clear yes for most people, and a clear no for a few.

  • Book it if you are anywhere near Málaga

An hour each way for something genuinely unlike anything else, at thirty dollars for the ticket. On value alone this is one of the best days in Andalucía.

  • Book a day tour if you have no car

It solves the drive, the parking and the shuttle, and 9,605 people have rated the standard one at 4.8.

  • Book entry with the shuttle if you are driving

The most underrated listing on this page, and the difference between a relaxed afternoon and a bus timetable.

  • Think twice if you have real vertigo

The walkway is solid and railed, but you are a hundred metres up for about an hour with no way to retreat.

  • Think twice in July and August

No shade, no water for sale, and four hours you cannot shorten. Take the first slot or come another month.

  • Skip it if anyone in the party is under eight

They will be refused at the gate. It is a rule of the route and there is no exception.

Common questions

Is the Caminito del Rey worth it, answered

Is the Caminito del Rey worth it?

Yes, if you know that the boardwalk is about 2.9 kilometres of a 7.7 kilometre walk. People who expect that are almost never disappointed; people expecting four hours of cliff sometimes are.

Is the Caminito del Rey worth doing?

For anyone near Málaga, comfortably. It is an hour each way, thirty dollars for entry with a guide, and there is very little like it in Europe.

Is the Caminito del Rey overrated?

Only if you were expecting the whole route to be the walkway. The gorge section genuinely lives up to the photographs; the approach paths do not appear in any of them.

What is the best thing about the Caminito del Rey?

For most people, the section where the 1905 path is visible below the modern one. It turns the walk from a view into a story.

How much does it cost to walk the Caminito del Rey?

Entry with a guide starts at $32. A full day from Málaga with the transport and the shuttle included starts at $64.

Should I book a tour or just the ticket?

A tour if you have no car; entry plus the shuttle if you are driving. The difference is entirely about how you get back from the southern exit.
