When to go
The route is open most of the year and the question is not what is open but how hot it is. A limestone gorge with no shade, four hours on foot and no way to leave early makes summer a genuine consideration rather than a preference.

The walk does not change. The temperature and the number of people on the walkway do.
Mar – May
Warm rather than hot, the valley green after the winter rain, and the reservoir at its most turquoise. The gorge has no shade at all, so this is the window where that stops mattering. It is also the busiest: weekend slots go two to three weeks ahead and the northern car park fills.
Sep – Oct
The heat breaks in the middle of September and the light in the gorge is at its best in the late afternoon. Noticeably fewer people than spring, and the walk is comfortable at any hour of the day.
Nov – Feb
Cold in the gorge, short daylight, and almost nobody on the walkway. The route stays open — rain alone does not close it, though high wind does, and that is the main winter risk. Tickets are easy to get at short notice.
Jun – Aug
Andalucía in July, in a limestone gorge, with no shade and no way to shorten the route once you have started. The walk is closed outright in extreme heat, which happens. Take the first slot of the day or come another month.
Why the hour matters more than the month
Summer: the first slot. Winter: the middle of the day.
There is no shade on the Caminito del Rey. Not a little — none, along the entire boardwalk, which is where you spend the middle hour of the walk. The pine woods at either end give you a bit; the gorge gives you nothing.
Combine that with a route you cannot leave early, no water for sale anywhere on it, and four hours on foot, and the middle of a July afternoon becomes a genuinely poor plan rather than an uncomfortable one. The authorities close the route in extreme heat, and they are right to.
So in June, July and August, book the earliest slot you can get. They sell out first and everybody who has done this before knows why.
In winter the opposite applies: the gorge is cold and in shadow for much of the day, and a midday slot is more pleasant than an early one. The light is also better later.
