What a guide actually adds here
Not navigation. History, and a bus.
The history, and somebody who has already solved the bus.
On a route with no junctions, no choices and a fence on both sides, a guide is not there to stop you getting lost. What they are there for is narrower and more interesting.
The 1905 path. Walking the Caminito without knowing what you are looking at below the modern walkway is missing the point of the place. In several sections the original concrete is visible — and in some stretches it is reduced to bare steel rods with nothing left on them. A guide will stop you at the right spots and explain that workers used this daily to move between two hydroelectric plants, and that it was closed for thirteen years after falling apart.
The geology and the reservoir. Why the water is that colour, what the dam is for, how the gorge formed. All of it is explicable in a sentence and invisible without one.
And the shuttle. This is the prosaic one and it matters most. Most guided listings either include the bus back or hand you onto it. A self-guided ticket leaves you at El Chorro with a timetable to find.
When self-guided is the better choice
Three situations
Your own pace, a second visit, or a shuttle already booked.
You want to go at your own pace. A guided group moves together, stops together and photographs together. Self-guided you can stand at the bridge for as long as the people behind you tolerate.
You are coming back. A second walk does not need the narrative, and the gorge is worth a second walk.
You already booked the shuttle. If the return is solved, the remaining difference is a few euros and a commentary, and reasonable people differ on that.
