How difficult is the Caminito del Rey? Less than the photographs suggest
It is marketed as the world’s most dangerous path and photographed from angles that support the claim. The reality is a level, railed, solid walkway that almost anybody can walk. What it actually asks of you is different, and worth knowing.

What it does not ask
The reputation is about the old path, not the new one
The danger was the 1905 path. You are walking the 2015 one.
The “most dangerous path in the world” label attached to the Caminito in the years when it was falling apart. Between the 1990s and 2015 the original 1905 walkway was collapsing, sections were down to bare steel reinforcement with nothing on them, and people did die attempting it. The route was closed for thirteen years for that reason.
What you walk now is a 2015 replacement built above the original. It is anchored into the rock, it has a continuous handrail, it does not move, and it is inspected. The reputation is entirely historical and every guide on the route will tell you so within the first ten minutes.
Physically it asks very little: no real ascent, a good surface, and a pace set by the group rather than by the terrain. People in ordinary walking shoes with no hiking experience do it every day.
What it does ask
Four things, and only one of them is physical
An hour of exposure, no way off, no shade, and no overtaking.
Exposure, for about an hour. A metre of walkway, a handrail, and a hundred metres of air below. Sections of the deck are metal grille you can see through, and there is a glass panel in the bridge. Most people who think they dislike heights manage it comfortably. A few genuinely cannot, and there is no dignified way to retreat.
Commitment. This is the underrated one. Once you are past the first section there is no exit until El Chorro. No shortcuts, no side paths, no way back. If somebody in your party is going to want out, they need to know that before the tunnel.
Half a day of walking with no shade. Not hard walking, but continuous, in a limestone gorge in Andalucía. In July that is a genuine ask and the route closes outright in extreme heat.
Patience. One-directional, a metre wide, no overtaking. On a busy day you move at the speed of the slowest person ahead of you and there is nothing to be done about it.
