Doing it yourself, honestly costed
The ticket is thirty dollars. The day is not.
A car, fuel, parking and the shuttle cost about what a day tour does.
The arithmetic that makes day tours look expensive does not survive contact with the actual logistics, so here it is properly.
Entry with a guide is around thirty dollars. Add a hire car for the day, fuel for 120 kilometres, the car park at the northern access, and the shuttle bus back from El Chorro — and you are close to the price of a day tour before anybody has driven anything.
The train is the interesting alternative and almost nobody mentions it. There is a halt at El Chorro on the Málaga–Seville line, about an hour and a half, with a handful of services a day. It puts you at the southern end, which means you take the shuttle north first, walk south, and finish where the train is. That is neat, and it is the one way of doing it that turns the one-way route into an advantage.
The day tour at $64 handles the lot: coach out, entry, guide, shuttle, coach back. If you have no car it is the only sensible option. If you have one, it is still competitive and it removes the part of the day most people get wrong.

Seven and a half hours, 5,824 ratings. The default choice, and a slightly longer day than the cheapest.
- With a white village — $71
The walk plus a stop in one of the pueblos blancos on the way back. More of Andalucía than the gorge alone.
- With a picnic, small group — $97
Six hours, capped numbers and 200 ratings at 4.9. The pleasant end of the day tours.
- Capped at seven — $139
The only listing here that genuinely limits the group. On a metre-wide one-way walkway that is the upgrade that changes the walk.
If you are driving anyway, the listing to look at is entry with the shuttle included — it is the cheapest thing here that solves the return.
